Working in collaboration with Nikken Sekkei and Takenaka Corporation, Jackson Teece was selected as concept and design architect for the facade of this mixed-use complex in the vibrant Tokyo ward of Shibuya.

A key part of the surrounding Miyashita Park revitalisation scheme, this three-storey landmark retail precinct and rooftop park is one of the few green spaces in the neighbourhood. Sitting in close proximity to the dynamic Shibuya Station, its ease of access has made it a sanctuary for residents and tourists alike.

Greenery wraps organically around the underlying mesh structures, providing a connection to nature and increasing green space in this dense, urban setting. The continuous green arches cover beach volley court, rock climbing field, skatepark, cafe and a large grass area. This peace and tranquility is balanced against the buzz of the northern end’s hotel and adjoining retail frontage, culminating in a site that is attractive to all who interact with it.

Due to the local context of the area and close proximity to the park, the design incorporates a series of canopy-like covers that frame the building with planter boxes at the base.
