The Globe, Commencement Ceremony

Works have officially begun on the first stage of The Globe development in Wollongong CBD. This month sees the demolition of the existing David Jones carpark, making way for a new City Diggers Club, a 114-room hotel and a 5-star Green Star–rated commercial building.

The project will be delivered in three stages. Phases 1 and 2—which include the new City Diggers Club and the commercial office buildings—are scheduled for completion by mid-2028. The final stage will introduce much-needed hotel accommodation, supporting the NSW Government’s strategy to expand visitor capacity across the state.

The commencement ceremony was attended by key local figures, including Wollongong City Council Lord Mayor Tania Brown and Minister for Planning and Public Spaces Paul Scully.

The development of The Globe directly addresses the recommendations of Wollongong City Council’s Tourism Accommodation Strategy Review, which calls for a broader range of visitor lodging options. As Lord Mayor Brown remarked, “Wollongong has so much to offer, and this development will enhance the experience for both locals and visitors. We’re at a real tipping point for the city, and this project will be a catalyst for transformative change.”
