Jackson Teece have been engaged as the lead design architects for this master planned seniors living project in Changsha. The project was secured through a competition process and will commence construction in early 2019, creating a highly connected and active community set in a serene landscape.
Our design approach draws inspiration from the local landscape and culture to provide a sense of place and a local connection. A consistent use of local building materials runs as a common thread through the central club house buildings, to provide a clear connection to local architecture and culture, aiming to invoke a sense of nostalgia for the residents.
The residential communities that surround the main public square are connected via covered pathways that can be traversed by pedestrians and golf carts, resulting in a walkable development. Covered walkways take on a soft organic form and irregular columns similar to a forest, integrate with the landscape to provide a connection to the natural environment. The public plaza will feature forested landscaping, shaded casual recreation areas and flowing water. The landscape, shade and water will provide a cooling effect in the summer similar to a mountain forest.
The hospital and care buildings co-located to the southeast of the site are in an elevated position and connected to the clubhouse and road network via a ground-level lobby and main entry porte-cochere. Atriums, vertical lift connections and central voids provide a visual and actual connection from the ground level lobby through the building and also allow sunlight to filter through the street level, connecting the health buildings back to the heart of the community.
